Interviews and things

Greetings!  I really do think about this blog a lot, I just have a hard time mustering up the energy to write in it.  Mostly because by the time I do write in it I have a lot to write about and it just takes forever.  I know, writing more frequently would easily solve that problem.  Let's just say we'll see...

I had my Tufts interview on Monday, yay!  I feel like it went pretty well.  I didn't come out thinking "OMFG THAT WAS FANTASTIC THEY ARE TOTALLY GOING TO LET ME IN" or anything like that but I tried really hard to not say "like" and they mostly asked me questions right from my application.  Looking back I realize how I could have answered some stuff better, brought up some more anecdotes to amuse them with, but alas I did not and I'm not going to dwell on it.  They did say to email them if I come up with anymore questions, so I may just have to come up with something to ask them, just to prove that I am super duper interested.  Walking around campus I didn't get any sort of "this is totally where I belong for the next 4-5 (more on that in a sec) kinda thing," but it's hard since it was really the first school I've visited so I didn't have anything to compare it to.  Plus I'm the Ice Queen and ice queens do not get mushy feelings like that.

The equine facility did seem pretty rad, and that's what I care about most.  Also, I really like their curriculum and they have a lot of research opportunities.  Included in that is an option to take 1 year and complete a masters in comparative biomedical science.  That can be done after your 1st, 2nd, or 4th year and is kind of intriguing to me because I do kinda actually like research but I don't want to do a full blown PhD or anything.  They also have NIH funded research opporutnities over the summer which would be rad.  Pretty much anywhere I go, I plan on staying over the summers since I shall be moving Ina with me and moving her back and forth would be a major pain in the ass.  Mostly I was really proud that I accomplished my two goals for the day which were 1) to not fall down on the ice (though I came close a couple times when walking from the train station because the sidewalk was basically like an ice slip'n'slide and even though I had some boots on and added little traction pads to them, they didn't help that much) and 2) to not trip in my heels as I entered the interview room.  They asked me about my thesis and seemed to like that I had that sort of research already under my belt, though I don't think they really cared at all about yeast proteins, not that I can blame them for that.  One of my interviewers was from Puerto Rico and I was really terrified for a while that he might ask me about my spanish classes and ask me to speak in spanish, but luckily he didn't.  And the other interviewer was super into 4-H and so I totally talked up my time in it (5th grade-high school) which she seemed impressed by.  I didn't mention that my particular 4-H group was more in it for the big horse show and we kinda slacked off on all of the other stuff but she didn't need to know that!

The rest of my Boston visit went really well too. A couple nights of drinking are always good for you.  Plus I had some friggin delicious food and I got to see someone from high school, people from Claremont, and people from study abroad.  All in all, not too shabby.  I got home last night and today I rode along with the equine vet and got to help her while she blocked nerves in one horse and put a couple stitches in the tongue of another, so not a bad day overall.  Tomorrow I'm gonna go ride Ina which is of course always exciting.

OH.  and since I haven't mentioned it here, I also have an interview at the University of Illinois on Feb. 23rd and one at Oregon State on the 25th.  Yeah, not the best timing, but I'm supposed to get back at 8:15pm on the 24th so just think really good weather thoughts for Chicago that day.  Also, got rejected from Colorado State, which I was kinda expecting.  That brings it to a total of 2 rejections, 3 interviews, and 4 that I'm still waiting to hear from (U Penn, Auburn, UGA, and Wisconsin).  Wish me luck!
